The purpose of a disturbing emotion is your unconscious mind is attempting to get you to take an action. The problem is, the unconscious only thinks in the present tense. So when you recall a past troubling or traumatic event and you feel angry, sad, fearful, irritated, frustrated, guilty, ashamed, etc. the unconscious thinks that event is happening NOW. It produces those feelings and sensations to get you to make a different choice so you don't get hurt... 20 YEARS AGO (or sometime in the past).
Let me ask you this... what is there for you to do to not get hurt 20 years ago ( or anytime in the past)? NOTHING!!!!! In RRT, it is the facilitator's job to get the good new to the unconscious mind that these disturbing events are OVER and THERE IS NOTHING FOR YOU TO DO ABOUT THEM!

You then have greater access to healing, to maintenance and repair of your body, to logic, creativity, passion, compassion, and so much more.
